Scouting is a worldwide movement that has shaped the
development of youth and adults for more than 100 years.
Scouts are in every part of our community, and Scouts is
the biggest and most successful youth organisation in
Scouts engages and inspires young Australians to develop confidence, resilience and leadership.
Learning by doing means developing as a result of first-hand experience as opposed to theoretical instruction by leaders and parents. It illustrates Scouting’s practical approach to education. Learning by doing also allows everyone in the movement to actively engage with the process and take ownership, with the assistance of his or her adult volunteers.
The natural environment (woods, plains, sea, mountains, deserts, etc.) provides an ideal setting in which the Scout Method can be applied. It is the ideal setting for developing youth’s physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual exploration. It involves the development of constructive contact with nature and making full use of all the unique learning opportunities provided by the natural world.
Scouts challenge their minds as well as their bodies. Not everyone looks for the outdoor buzz all the time, so Scouts have challenging activities linked with the internet and amateur radio, performance arts such as singing, dancing, and acting and awards linked to citizenship, community service and personal spiritual development.
The patrol is the basic organisational structure in Scouting. Each small group, normally comprising six to eight youth members operates as a team with one member acting as the team leader. Weekly meetings are held to build up skill levels, play games and have fun and plan for weekend adventures with the support of adult volunteers.
Scouting is an ideal activity for the whole family. Sons and daughters can be involved and parents are encouraged to join in with activities and become helpers, supporters or Leaders.
